Maybe you’ve tried to bring it up with a doctor and felt dismissed. Maybe you’ve never told anyone at all because you weren’t sure anyone would understand without judging you. Sex therapy is a specialized form of psychotherapy focused specifically on sexual health, intimacy, and the concerns that affect how you feel in your body and in your relationships. It is talk-based, nonjudgmental, and grounded in the understanding that sexual concerns are rarely just physical or just emotional — they almost always involve both. You deserve care from someone who actually specializes in this. That’s what I do. ![](https://desertheartcounseling.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Hands-1024x683.png)**You might be in the right place if…** Sexual concerns are far more common than most people realize — and far more treatable than most people have been told. If any of these feel familiar, sex therapy may be exactly what you need: •Pain or tension during sex •Low desire or a complete loss of interest in sex •Difficulty with arousal or reaching orgasm •Sexual shutdown after trauma or a difficult experience •Shame, guilt, or confusion around your sexuality or desires •Anxiety or disconnection during intimacy •Compulsive sexual behaviors or out-of-control sexual feelings •Concerns about sexual identity or orientation •Navigating kink, non-monogamy, or relationship structures outside the mainstream •Intimacy challenges in your relationship that feel stuck **How sex therapy actually works** As a Certified Sex Therapist through AASECT — the gold standard credential in the field — I bring specialized training that most therapists simply don’t have. Sex therapy requires both clinical expertise and a genuinely nonjudgmental approach. I provide both. My work is grounded in the understanding that most sexual concerns are adaptive responses to difficult experiences, relationship patterns, or nervous system dysregulation — not evidence that something is wrong with you. I don’t pathologize sexuality. I don’t have an agenda about what your sex life should look like. My job is to help you get to what you actually want. For clients whose sexual concerns are connected to trauma — and many are — I integrate EMDR and Somatic Experiencing alongside sex therapy to address the nervous system patterns underneath the surface symptoms. This combination is something very few therapists in Arizona are trained to offer. My practice is affirming and welcoming to adults of all genders, sexual orientations, and relationship structures including LGBTQ+ individuals, kink-identified clients, and those in non-monogamous relationships. ![](https://desertheartcounseling.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/IMG_1677-scaled.jpeg)**What sex therapy is — and isn’t** Many people feel embarrassed or nervous about reaching out for sex therapy because they’re not sure what it involves. Sex therapy is talk-based psychotherapy. There is no physical contact, no nudity, and nothing sexual happens in sessions. We talk — about your history, your concerns, your goals, and what gets in the way. Sessions are 50 minutes and available in person in Phoenix or via telehealth throughout Arizona. A free 15-minute consultation is available before you commit to anything — and many people find that one conversation is enough to feel confident moving forward. **Why a certified sex therapist matters** I have been a Certified Sex Therapist since 2024 and have been working with sexual health concerns since 2015. My background includes training at The Meadows under nationally recognized experts, advanced certification in EMDR and Somatic Experiencing, and specialized education through the Institute for Sexuality Education and Enlightenment. Many of my clients have spent years feeling too specific, too complicated, or too embarrassed to ask for help with sexual concerns. Some have seen other therapists who didn’t know what to do with what they shared. If that sounds familiar, you’re likely exactly who I work with best. **You deserve care that actually addresses this** Sexual concerns deserve the same care and attention as any other aspect of your mental and physical health. You don’t have to keep navigating this alone. Reach out today to schedule a free 15-minute consultation. No obligation — just a conversation about whether we might be a good fit. I grew up with significant trauma and was shaped early by loss, instability, and experiences that took years to fully understand and heal. Addiction touched my life deeply — through people I loved and through my own journey into recovery. I know what it means to grieve people lost to substances. I know what it means to carry trauma in your body long after the events themselves have passed. The turning point that brought me to this work was the sudden loss of someone I loved — someone whose untreated trauma and mental health struggles contributed to his death. That loss made something clear to me: people deserve access to care that actually reaches the level where the pain lives. I went back to school, earned my Master’s in Professional Counseling from Grand Canyon University, and committed myself to understanding trauma — how it forms, how it lives in the nervous system and the body, and how people genuinely heal. My own healing has involved EMDR, somatic work, and learning to listen to what my body was trying to tell me long before my mind caught up. That experience is not separate from my clinical work — it is foundational to it. I am in recovery. I have sat across from a therapist and tried to find words for things that lived deeper than words. I know what it feels like when the work finally reaches the right level. That shapes everything about how I show up for the people I work with. **Why trauma and sexuality:** My path into sex therapy emerged from recognizing how profoundly trauma affects the body — including sexuality, desire, intimacy, and the capacity to feel safe with another person. These aren’t separate issues. Healing one almost always requires attending to the other. I trained at The Meadows, a nationally recognized trauma and addiction treatment center, alongside leading experts including Peter Levine and Pia Mellody. I began with a specialization in compulsive sexual behaviors and over time expanded into certified sex therapy — because I kept seeing how many people were struggling at exactly that intersection and how few therapists were equipped to help them there. **My approach:** I don’t believe one modality fits everyone. I bring a range of evidence-based, body-informed approaches to my work and weave them together based on what each person actually needs. My training includes EMDR with specialized focus on attachment wounding, developmental trauma, and dissociation — Somatic Experiencing at the practitioner level — NARM, which addresses patterns formed in early relational trauma — Post Induction Therapy through Pia Mellody’s model — DBT skills — and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy for clients who haven’t found relief through traditional approaches. As a Certified Sex Therapist through AASECT, I bring specialized clinical training in sexual health, intimacy, and the full range of concerns that affect how people experience their bodies and their relationships. My practice is affirming and welcoming to adults of all genders, sexual orientations, and relationship structures — including LGBTQ+ individuals, kink-identified clients, and those in non-monogamous relationships. > **Specialized Training** > > Sex Therapy Training – [Institute for Sexuality Education and Enlightenment](https://instituteforsexuality.com/) > > Certified Sex Therapist – [American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists](https://www.aasect.org/) > > Out of Control Sexual Behavior (OCSB) – [Doug Braun-Harvey, MFT, CGP](https://www.theharveyinstitute.com/) > On-going consultation > > Sensate Focus – [Paula Leech, LMFT, CST, CSTS](https://www.paulaleech.com/) > > Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) – [Somatic Experiencing International](https://traumahealing.org/) > > Somatic Resilience and Regulation (SRR) – [Steve Terrell, PsyD ](https://www.resilienceandregulation.com/)and [Kathy Kain, PhD](https://somaticpractice.net/) > > Relational Bodywork and Somatic Education (BASE) – BASE Practitioner – [Dave Berger, MFT, PT, MA, SEP](https://daveberger.net/) > > Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – [EMDR Institute](https://www.emdr.com/) – [Certified](https://www.emdria.org/) -Specialized Training in Attachment Wounding, Developmental Trauma and Dissociation > > Post Induction Therapy (PIT) – [The Meadows of Wickenburg](https://www.themeadows.com/blog/what-is-post-induction-therapy/) > > [Dialectical and Behavioral Therapy Skills Training](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2963469/) – Psychwire > > Ketamine-Assisted Therapy Training – [Polaris Insight Center](https://www.polarisinsight.com/) > > Previous Certified Sex Addiction Therapist – [International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals](https://iitap.com/) – No longer maintaining certification [Contact Me](https://desertheartcounseling.com/contact/) --- ### [Trauma Therapy in Phoenix, AZ](https://desertheartcounseling.com/trauma-healing/) **Published:** April 16, 2025 **Author:** gagnonzachary11@gmail.com **Content:** ### Body-based, trauma-informed care for adults ready to heal at the deepest level Something happened. Maybe it was a single event — an assault, an accident, a loss. Maybe it was years of something smaller but relentless — chronic stress, emotional neglect, growing up in a home where you never felt safe. You may look fine on the outside but inside you’re exhausted from managing — your reactions, your anxiety, the distance you feel from your own body and the people you love. Therapy can help you stop managing and start healing. ![](https://desertheartcounseling.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Smaller-1024x819.jpeg)**Does any of this sound familiar?** If any of these feel familiar, trauma therapy may be exactly what you need: •You’ve tried talk therapy and found it helpful but incomplete •You startle easily or feel on edge most of the time •You shut down, go numb, or dissociate under stress •You struggle to feel present during intimacy or close relationships •You experience physical symptoms — pain, tension, fatigue — with no clear medical cause •You feel disconnected from your body or your emotions •You carry shame about who you are or what happened to you •You’ve experienced sexual trauma and it has affected your relationship with your body or sexuality **How I work with trauma** Trauma doesn’t live in the thinking mind — it lives in the body. Talking about it helps to a point, but real healing requires working with the nervous system as well as the mind. My approach integrates EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, NARM, Post Induction Therapy, DBT Skills, and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy — woven together based on what each person needs. I am EMDR certified with specialized training in attachment wounding, developmental trauma, and dissociation, and I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner with training in specific touch skills work. I also specialize in the intersection of trauma and sexual health — an area most trauma therapists aren’t equipped to address. As a Certified Sex Therapist, I bring specialized training to both sides of that intersection. You don’t have to choose between trauma therapy and sex therapy. ![](https://desertheartcounseling.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/monument-valley-1.jpg)**What our work together looks like** Trauma therapy with me is not about reliving what happened. My approach is paced, collaborative, and always guided by what feels safe and manageable for you. We build a foundation of safety before moving into deeper processing work. Sessions are 50 minutes, available in person in Phoenix or via telehealth throughout Arizona. I accept credit and debit cards through a secure client portal. At this time, I do not accept insurance or work directly with insurance companies. Upon request, I can provide a superbill for clients who wish to seek out-of-network reimbursement from their insurance provider. I also work with Thrizer, which can help you use your out-of-network benefits without waiting for reimbursement. Rather than paying my full fee and waiting for insurance to reimburse you, Thrizer allows you to pay only your estimated co-insurance amount at the time of session. Ask me about this during your consultation. ### **Good Faith Estimate** In accordance with the No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a [Good Faith Estimate](https://www.cms.gov/files/document/nosurpriseactfactsheet-whats-good-faith-estimate508c.pdf) explaining the expected cost of your services. This estimate is provided in writing before your first appointment or at any time upon request. The estimate is not a contract — it simply outlines expected charges so you can make informed decisions about your care. ### **Cancellations & Rescheduling** Appointments must be cancelled or rescheduled at least 48 hours in advance. Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours notice will be billed a $100 cancellation fee. Sessions cancelled less than 2 hours before the scheduled appointment time or missed without notice are billed at the full session rate. If you experience an emergency, please reach out as soon as possible to discuss options. ### **Sliding Scale / Reduced Fee** I maintain a small number of reduced-fee slots for clients with demonstrated financial need.
